Chemo-Therapist: How Cancer Cured A Marriage By: Mary Potter Kenyon Genre: Memoir/Caregiving 224 pages Publisher: Familius , 2014 I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review. When Mary's husband of 27 years is diagnosed with cancer it puts an added strain on an already troubled marriage. But after visiting her husband post surgery she finds herself falling in love with him again. A horrible disease ended up making their marriage stronger. I found this to be a brutally honest memoir that was poignant and uplifting. It also provided useful information on caregiving and explaining a loved one's sickness to young children. I recommend it. About the author:  Mary Potter Kenyon graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a B.A. in Psychology. She writes a weekly coupon column for the Dubuque Telegraph Herald newspaper and is the Director of the Winthrop Public Library. Mary is widely published in magazines, newspapers, and anthologi...

Dr. Perv

Last night I was not feeling well. I was alternating between hot and cold. My forehead also felt hot to the touch so I asked the husband: " I feel hot. Will you check either my forehead or cheek and see what you think?" " You're on fire!", he exclaimed. " Wrong cheek Dr. Perv."

Fog Of Solace

Image
My two readers might already know this but I will live with two men  (NO, not that way. Get your mind out of the gutter. Geez). The testosterone has a tendency to choke me at times. Sometimes I need to relax. One of the ways I do that is escaping to the Wal-mart (ooh shiny) or by taking a shower. I close and lock the door, turn on the water, and let the steam envelope me into a fog of solace. My tense muscles relax, my muddled mind goes blank. Ahhhh bliss. KNOCK.KNOCK.KNOCK. "HEY! Can you open the door. I gotta go." Crap. The fog breaks. I am brought back to reality by an overactive bladder.

Sea of Pee

Image
"You peed on the floor again", I said to a male relative. "No I didn't.", he exclaimed back. "Yes you did." "No I didn't." "Yes you did." (Yes we have very mature conversations.) "Oh.my. gosh.", the husband exclaimed, "What difference does it make?" " I just cleaned the floor." "It's not a big deal." "BE. QUIET.", I said. "Would you all like to clean the house and wipe up the bathroom 4 or 5 times a day? Cause I'd be HAPPY to quit doing it." Silence. I don't mind cleaning the house. Lord knows men can't do it right and usually I don't mind wiping up the tinkle. I understand that sometimes when men pull the trigger their aim isn't always true, but when the urge to whiz hits me quickly it's like an obstacle course trying to avoid the sea of pee.

A Review of The Richard Burton Diaries

Image
Published October 23, 2012 Yale University Press 704 pages Synopsis: This book covers the diary entries from the time Burton was a teenager living in Wales in the late 1930's until 1983, the year before he died. They reveal his most intimate thoughts-from co-stars, his marriage, children, and the many books he read. The book also has annotations to clarify people, places, and other experiences of his. Review: I thought the book started off slow, not because of Burton's writing style but because of the same things happening over and over. It picked up during his marriage to Elizabeth Taylor. He wrote his innermost thoughts on his marriage, children, fears, desires, and thoughts on co-workers. He had an engaging writing style. I found him to be intelligent, funny, and somewhat catty. Despite the slow start I enjoyed reading the book. I found him to be an interesting man. My rating: * I received a complimentary copy from Yale University Press via Netgalley in exchan...
